Need help getting information from a live range

I hope somebody can help - In this case I am trying to dump data in and
have Excel automatically format it into a report.

I'm stuck -

1st - I dump data in.
Then, I use Vlookup to associate the data with a sort criteria - e.g. -
If this number matches this number, return the closest 3 colums.

Now I've got the resulting database (a series of vlookup formulas). I
need to sort it and subtotal it. I can't sort the information because
it's simply formulas, I don't want to copy and past as values because
the information will be changing all the time.

I need to sort by 1's, then sobtotal those (and since I want it to
automatically generate a report, I want the associated information -
eg. the field of cells associated with "1".

I've tried the pivot table, but it's not working well.
