Make sure you have not turned off calculation:
Tools, Options, Calculation (tab), [x] automatic
(the shortcut Ctrl+` the key to left of number row is a toggle)
Make sure you haven't made the format text, see what you have
if you select formula cell and use Format, Cells, ...look...
In another column enter =A1 does that work
it would show that formulas work or don't work,
if it works possibly you have extra characters like a space
before the equal sign or other characters that look like spaces.
