The new ribbon interface has been a serious productivity killer for
me. I have read the reasoning behind the new interface and I agree
with most of it, but there is some inconsistency as to why we can't
have a "classic menu" option. Outlook 2007 still has a menu bar and
it's possible to create one via an add-in, but Microsoft insists that
all users re-learn how to use Office. It is a waste of time to be
forced to go on a hunting expedition for the "copy format" button (or
any of the other menu options).
I've been using 2007 for a few weeks it has been difficult just to do
routine things. I did not have a choice in my upgrade, but it will be
a long time before I upgrade the rest of my users. This was a serious
misstep on Microsoft's part.
The "menu" add-in has restored me to a reasonable level of
productivity and still allows me to adjust to the new interface.
Microsoft should buy it/create their own and make it an optional
download.
I'm not suggesting the new ribbon interface should go away. In fact I
like it very much, but forcing me to use it with no other options is
just plain dumb.
I felt the same way when I first saw the ribbon, but after using it for a while I found I actually could get to things quicker than with the old menus. If it was a command that I use a lot then I put it on the quick
access bar. With a 22" wide LCD I can put a LOT of stuff in there.
Also Cntl F1 let you hidw the ribbon with just the tabs showing if you need the space.
A lot of it is being able to accept change. I've been forced to deal with changing software (not just MS) for 20 years. You can fight it and be miserable, or you can learn it and make it work for you. It's usually just a matter of attitude.
