That is the ONLY "safe" answer, but short of methods used
by NSA there are file recovery programs, that might help.
Of course the more you do on your computer the more
likely parts of the file will have been destroyed -- even the
fact of installing additional software. Take a look at
http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/backup.htm
look for the word "deleted" you will run across at least
on free recovery utility. Probably not worth your time
unless it is going to take you more than a day to recover.
You usually build things a little better the second and
third time around. By the third time you usually get serious about creating and maintaining a backup
CD in a safe location.
The main thing to keep in mind is to back up your files.
You might check the same directory for files with
8 hex digit names with no file extensions and file with
extension of .bak or .bck Just watch out that you
don't break something else.
Please tell us in a few days what you did, feedback is
always at least interesting.
