hi JEM,

try as i might, i was not able to get it to work. no matter what i
declared as the type (variant et al), it still gave me a Type Mismatch
error.

i think, i may be missing something.

i came up with a workaround. there is a text box where in the user
enters the userid. i took that and used it in the vlookup statement
that you gave me. it works like a dream. it does exactly what i
intended it to do.
