upgrade network from server 2003 to server 2008

I want to preface by saying that I am a teacher, who also happens to be
responsible for IT in a school with about 125 PCs running XP Pro or 2000 Pro,
and 20 new DevonIT thin clients. I'm still have much to learn.
Our previous network had one server; Dell Poweredge running Server 2003
Standard edition. It was used as a file server/print server, and it hosted
some applications we use in the school such as filemaker pro, Follett library
software, and the student data management system Sasi. DHCP and DNS were
being handled at the high school, where the internet entered the district
network. A fiber cable connects the high school with my school. Our domain
name is vues. The name of this computer is vuesnt.
We decided to set up a new computer lab, and settled on DevonIT thin clients
and Windows terminal services. A new HP server was purchased that has Server
2008. So we can institute group policies, we have set things up like this:
- A dual core Dell PC with server 2008 to handle DHCP, DNS, and as the
primary domain controller with the new domain name vues0. Name: vuesdc
- The new server for terminal services. Name vues-term-serv
- The old server is still running server 2003, and is continuing to be used
for file/print/application serving. We wanted to upgrade to 2008, but the
"C" partition is set for 12gig, and it needs to be 15 or more for an upgrade.
I'm wondering if this is creating a problem. Name: vuesnt
The issue we are having is this: When folks log into the domain on a PC,
they can see a "S" drive that we have created which is the path to their
folder on the file server vuesnt. Everyone has a folder inside of a folder
called "user". Vuesnt has two partitions, "C" and "D". D is where the user
folder is located. C is the partition that is too small. When people log
into terminal services in the lab or through remote desktop connection they
get to the 2008 terminal services desktop just fine, but when they save
documents these documents are going to a user folder on the terminal server.
We want saving to be pointed directly to their folder on vuesnt. The S drive
shows up inside of my computer in terminal services, but people have to
manually redirect their saving.
Next, on all the PCs around the building that I have rejoined to the new
domain vues0, I am have changed the path of their "my documents" to their
folder on vuesnt. My understanding is that it is supposed to synchronize,
and what shows in their my documents folder is what is in their S
drive/server folder. But, nothing is showing inside of my documents.
Finally, on many of the PCs I have to type in administrator credentials to
get network place shortcuts to vuesnt user folders everytime the workstation
is rebooted. This affects printing also. Windows 2000 does not have the
option to remember these credentials. Its a real pain.
Are all these problems somehow related? Where did we go wrong in our setup?
Is the failed upgrade to server 2008 causing these issues somehow? I know
this is a long post, and I really appreciate any help. Thanks!
