Do you happen to know whether the express edition
has the same compiler/linker/etc. version as the
professional edition (for example).
The short answer is "mostly". The longer answer is found in the express
edition's FAQ

40. Does Visual C++ 2005 Express include the "optimizing compiler"?
Yes, Visual C++ 2005 Express Edition includes the same core optimizing
compiler that will be included with all other Visual Studio 2005 editions.
Some new expanded optimization features, including Profile Guided
Optimizations, will be available only in the Professional and above editions
of Visual Studio 2005.

And I should point out that I don't about the timing of service pack
releases, specifically whether the express edition saw a service pack
release recently when VS2005 did.
