Re: Re: Slightly OT ? regarding posting to this group...

I agree wholeheartedly! Hate scrolling down to find what *new* has been
added to the thread. I am not an old time usenet user, and if that is the
only reason for bottom posting, they can ... well you get my drift!

Bottom posting take much scrolling. Yes, it is date/time order but if
you are following the post, you have to scroll through the same stuff
over and over.

And, if you ARE following the thread, you know what is there and top
posting makes ever so much sense. Just pop the item open and read.

Personally, I don't see ANY problem with top posting for everything. If
you need the background, YOU can scroll back and everyone else who does
not need the background just reads the latest with having to scroll all
the way through a post to see (sometimes) one additional line.

Top posting makes sense all the way around. Those OFs who say "well, it
has always been done this way and, by damn, we are going to continue"
might just like top posting if they tried it. Saves lots of time
scrolling down through the same junque, time after time, post after
post, day after tiresome day and lets you quickly read the latest every
time!

In the last week or so I have seen a few comments about "top posters" as
being some sort of 2nd class citizens. This is the first I had heard this in
the over a year I have been using this site. I have gone back and looked at
all the guidelines, and there is no mention of top vs bottom posting. Also,
since the the reply dialog opens with a 'top post' style, I would of thought
that would be the 'recommended' way to reply, but I am willing to play by the
rules, if in fact that is what people want and not just the ramblings of a
few zanny people.
Comments?

Terry,

This topic has been debated off and on... I can tell you, that the
argument originates from the fact that the accepted style for usenet
posts has been bottom post (and inline replies) for a long time. The
problem is, that MS producst tend to ignore that long standing convention
and default to top posting - which has lead many people new to usenet or
who have mainly been in the MS world the mistaken impression that this is
the norm.

If you think about it, bottom posting actually makes more sense, because
if trimming and quoting is done correctly, you can read the post top to
bottom, like any article, and have the full context without going back
up the thread - especially handy if you do not have the full thread
available on your server. Top posting makes it more difficult for this
to work, since you have to start at the bottom and work up to keep
context.

That said, do as you will :)
