Hi Andrew,
Welcome to MSDN Managed Newsgroup!
Based on my understanding, your first question is how to programmatically
read/write the file proproperties displayed in the summary tab of file
properties on XP and the details tab on Vista. Your second question is how
to get the information under the Version tab on XP. Please feel free to let
me know if I've misunderstood anything.
For your first question, there's a ready-to-use component to do that from
Microsoft:
#Download details: Developer Support OLE File Property Sample (DSOFILE)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=9BA6FAC6-520B-4A0A-
878A-53EC8300C4C2&displaylang=en
For your second question:
The System.Diagnostics.FileVersionInfo class lets you easily read file
version information without having to call Windows API functions. This
class has a static GetVersionInfo method that returns a FileVersionInfo
object related to a given file. Once you have such an object, retrieving
version information is as easy as calling its properties.
Please feel free to let me know if there's anything else I can help. Thanks.
Sincerely,
Walter Wang (wawang@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, remove 'online.')

Note: The MSDN Managed Newsgroup support offering is for non-urgent issues
where an initial response from the community or a Microsoft Support
Engineer within 1 business day is acceptable. Please note that each follow
up response may take approximately 2 business days as the support
professional working with you may need further investigation to reach the
most efficient resolution. The offering is not appropriate for situations
that require urgent, real-time or phone-based interactions or complex
project analysis and dump analysis issues. Issues of this nature are best
handled working with a dedicated Microsoft Support Engineer by contacting
Microsoft Customer Support Services (CSS) at
