I'm sure that there are dozens of similar stories, but a company I used
to work for (who later became my clients) is having the same experience
with outsourcing to Indonesia. My buddy, who still works there, is
tearing his hair out because although the Indonesian guys work hard and
produce a lot, communication is a big problem, and as often as not they
produce the wrong thing. Quality control is a big problem, too.

The selling point for domestic workers is direct communication, and
ease of reviewing their work. So, clear communication skills are a big
deal.

Fads come and go: twenty years ago it was domestic outsourcing. That's
still going on, but people are fully aware that it's not a "silver
bullet" that's going to solve all of their systems problems. More
recently it has been overseas outsourcing. Same story: it will
continue, but people will be much more aware of the pros and cons. All
of which means that domestic programming will always be the foundation
upon which a shop is built.

Mind you, it will never again be as crazy lucrative as it was in the
90's. Nonetheless, there won't be any shortage of work.
