Re: Upgrade qualification

Hi all.

I sent an e-mail to Microsoft sales support two weeks ago and the only
response I've had is an advertisement for a conference so I'm hoping
that someone here can answer the question.

Can anyone tell me whether a registered copy of Visual Studio 6.0 is
sufficient to qualify for the Upgrade version of Visual Studio 2008,
or will I have to buy the full version?

I should add that I want to buy from a store in the UK, rather than
downloading from the MS web site.

The documentation that I have read says that "any version of Visual
Studio" will qualify for the upgrade version, but I want to be clear
before I buy that this doesn't refer only to versions of Visual Studio
.NET.

Also, I would want to keep version 6.0 installed on the same (Vista
Business) machine, so I wouldn't want the upgrade to delete the
existing version, or render it useless.

Thanks for any help.

Gale.

First, I'd suggest that you contact a Microsoft office in the UK by telephone to get your question answered. Here's a link you might find useful:

Second, I don't think getting the upgrade will get you what you want. When you purchase an upgrade version of software, you are trading in the license to the old version for the license to the new version. Thus, you lose the right to continue to use the old version when you install the new version. I believe you will need to get the full Visual Studio 2008 to retain your license to VS 6.

Caveat: The above is my understanding only. Get an authoritative opinion from Microsoft when you call them.
