I had a similar situation, the support was hopeless, and I finally resolved
it by uninstalling, thoroughly cleaning the hard disk and the registry of
Symantec and Norton leftovers, and installing AVG anti-Virus and
anti-Spyware and ZoneAlarm free firewall.

I m using a Packard Bell Easy Note MV preloaded with Windows XP HE
with
SP2
and NIS 2005 . I have to uninstal the NIS because everytime I am
online
(via
WIFI) NIS keeps poping up with messages for me to download updates
because of
new findings. I always click on for the updates, but NIS always come
back
advising that downloading was unsuccessful owing to lapse time and
disconnected from the downloader and request that I click on
downloading
the
updates again. I went through many times of uninstalling NIS and now
resolve
to the fact that NIS must be permanently disabled. Guidance will be
greatly
appreciated
