Really? The why are they retreating on the amount of .NET they have put
in Vista? Vista beta 1 has far *fewer* .NET applications than the PDC
2003 build of Longhorn even when you take the removal of WinFS into
account. Your assertion is incorrect. Microsoft have put in huge
resources to persuade the developer community to use .NET, but they have
decided not to do it themselves. The *big* innovations in Vista are
native code, not managed.

I agree with you here. In response to a question about this issue Eric
Rudder told me that there really wasn't any intention of making Office
managed. He told me that their intention was to integrate .NET into
Office so that developers could extend Office. Those two statements
support my statement above, that is, Microsoft's plan is for the wider
community to use .NET, but not to use it themselves. In effect, .NET is
taking the role that VB4,5,6 took years ago.
