I finally and wrongly concluded that the problem was generally a Windows
2000 problem, but it turns out that it isn't. Both instances of W2k on my
desktop have the problem, but my boss's machine does not have it. Lucien at
Microsoft was able to reproduce the problem, and so perhaps there will be a
solution in train eventually. In the meantime I will try to operate around
the difficulty.
