How to modify Path read from the registry

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hi,
I am reading a path where my application has to be installed from the
registry.(using Search Target machine )
But that path in the form ,for example c:\program
files\setup\childsetup.
But i want to modify the path so that it doesnt contains last
component ie
c:\program files\setup where i want to install my application.
how to do this.
I am using VS.NET
