I have vista ultimate in a box on my desk agonizing over installing it on my
laptop. Is it worth it? this is single core with 2 gig of ram. I fear it
will shred my laptop. thoughts?

I'm using a current generation dual core machine with x86 Vista Ultimate,
and development performence is just fine.
I'm not running a virus scanner (they're worse than the virii), and using
VS 2008, SQL 2005, and all the usual array of Office tools.
The difference in Vista performance on my current generation desktop, and
my older laptop is just unbelievable...

I'm struggling to get an answer to this. I asked two months back on
another
forum and got no response. I asked on SQL forums but, of course, they use
WS2003.
So I'll be brief.
I have two PCs
Brand New PC: CoreDuo2.3/3.5gbRam/2xSATA7200rpm/VistaBusiness/NoAero
Old 2003 Laptop: Centrino1.4/512mbRam/1xIDE5400rpm/XPPro
Hardware wise, this new PC is at least twice the speed.
I use VS2005 Team Edition & SQL2005 Dev. Edition on both. No crap on
either
machine. Mostly Winforms, lots of data.
I've tried various tests: compiling, running, SQL throughput, loading
projects, etc.
My Laptop wins most tests. Some by quite a margin.
I'm obviously wasting development time while watching the hourglass. On
saying that, ditching Vista and jumping to XPPro/WS2003 is a couple of
days
work.
Any thoughts?
