Problem closing socket when connected over GPRS

I'm having a problem with some simple TCP comms, searching the
newsgroup has thrown up some old postings on the same issue but with no
resolutions, so I'm wondering if anybody has any new ideas.

The problem is that the app kicks off a socket.beginreceive, but
calling socket.close or shutdown doesn't terminate this immediately
when connecting over GPRS, it takes a couple of minutes, which is a bit
of a PITA.

I've tried various approaches which I was hoping would raise an
exception that I could trap, but with no luck.

Any suggestions?
