Does anyone have any pointers or example on how to compress /
decompress data?

It depends on what type of data? Audio, video? Can the compression be
lossy or must it be lossless (application data for example).

With MP3 and other "lossy" perceptual encoding (I prefer that over the term "compression in this context"), the encoder uses a fairly complex algorithm to decide what sounds you won't hear because they're masked by other sounds, and simply throws them away. ... Everybody who cares about music fidelity knows that there's a difference between lossy encoding and lossless or no file size reduction, but most understand that there's a place for each, and that the car is not a place to worry about the difference. ...
