I'd like to include a sliding/ hide navigation panel, the likes of what you
see in Visual studio.

Is there a short cut tool I can use for this?
If not, how would this be best done? With javascript & a div?

Check out the Ajax toolkit from MS. There are animations built in. Never tried it but it could be simpler than rolling your own.
