Declarative Web Parts

I've been looking into creating Web Parts with asp.net 2.0, and I like the
framework. My question is, is there a way to write them declaratively? I
don't see anything like a <% WebPart %> declaration. To me, writing web
parts completely in code is a bit of a step backwards.

Any suggestions/resources on this?

Thanks,
