Researching the Web for how to disable notification was interesting. There
appeared to be at least two ways: 1) changing an AutoRun flag in the
registry; 2) changing a <settings> tab for the CDROM driver configuration.
The later doesn't exist in Windows XP, however the first does. We set
AutoRun to '0', somewhere deep in the registry. It's interesting how a flag
for the CDROM would affect polling on the C drive.

Anyway, "explorer.exe" still sends a query to "c:". The query is
FileFsFullSizeInformation. Filemon shows an OPEN, QUERY, CLOSE sequence.


Turning off AutoRun doesn't turn off polling.

We're hoping there is a way to configure Windows XP, SP2, to not poll the
drive or even open it for logging. We are willing to buy a support incident
if we knew this could be achieved. Since you're part of the SDK team, your
advice here would be appreciated. In the mean time, we've disabled virtual
memory, turned of the event logger, disabled a number of other services that
will not be needed, and so forth. There isn't much going to the hard drive
now, except explorer.exe polls and svchost.exe wakes up now and then. and
accesses the hard-drive A way to turn those off would be great, and we're
happy purchasing a support incident to find out how.

svchost isn't doing anything except running some service. It's that
service (whatever it is) which is accessing the hard drive.

The last thing we want to do is read the drive's S.M.A.R.T. registers to
extract runtime information, like temperature and so forth. Does the SDK
support this?

I'm not sure but I don't think so.
