That's under consideration, though not as yet pursued. There was a
question that, if we remain with pre-TAPI 3.x (as our application is
now managed code and would prefer to not have to do much rearrangement
as TAPI 3 can't be used via managed code directly), if support from
Microsoft would still be available. I take it that MS still supports
old versions of TAPI?

TAPI2 isn't an old version and TAPI3 isn't new version. They are different
versions, different approaches to TAPI.
TAPI2 has a C-Style API, TAPI3 is COM-based.
TAPI2 has a more complete feature set than TAPI3.
The only relevant thing new in TAPI3 is an additional way to access media.
In fact MS has cut TAPI3 stuff within Vista and WS2k8: H323.TSP and IPconf.TSP
(both only relevant for TAPI3 apps) have been removed and Dialer.exe has
returned from TAPI3 (W2k, XP) to TAPI2 (pre W2k OS, WS2k3, Vista, WS2k8).
I guess TAPI2 will be longer available than TAPI3 in future OS.
