I believe the high device count in the registry is from an unintentionaly stupid multiple driver installation session creating many modem installs. There is physicaly only one device in the system and only one key in the registry path.
I have tried to forcibly install the latest driver, however it has proven more troublesome than imagined as the machine is a Dell (in a physicaly remote location) and I cannot determine the device's manufacturer beyond the Conexant chip on it. The driver currently installed is the latest reference one from their site.
Thankyou and Grant for the suggestions though, I will continue to pursue the driver angle and try and get hold of the hardware for testing in different boxes.
Ian.

I've had a C++ TAPI2 application working happily under win2k for a while now, it opened a line, found the wave/out device and used SAPI to mercilessly taunt the system spt engineer on the other end (usualy myself). However a recent upgrade to Win2K3 server has left the program unable to find any compatible devices on the machine. Forcing it to accept LINEMEDIA_INTERACTIVEVOICE gives the fun "Lift the receiver and click talk" dialog as most faqs indicate it should and prevents the SAPI from getting the wave/out handle. An investigation with TB2.exe has confirmed that the device has indeed lost its AUTOMATEDVOCIE and wave/out capabilities. Has anyone else had similar problems on this upgrade path or can offer thoughts?
Ian, it seems that WS2k3 has been lead to the asumption that your modem is only a data modem but not a voice modem. Did you use the same modem.INF file for installation ? You may want to re-install with the latest driver from the manufacturer.

You seem to have at least 3 modems installed (according to the registry path). Correct? Are you sure using the one you want?
