Gatekeeper support is available only on Windows XP and W2k3.
The H.323 TSP on W2k only supports gateways and proxies,
but no gatekeepers.
On WinXP and W2k3:
Control Panel >> Phone and Modem Options >> Advanced >>
>> MS H.323 Service Provider >> Configure
On the TAPI client itself you don't need to take any particular
steps. The only change is that once you have configured a
gatekeeper you can use LINEADDRESSTYPE_PHONENUMBER
for creating calls.
To use LINEADDRESSTYPE_PHONENUMBER you must either
have
- an H.323 gateway configured (like
http://ww.terasens.com/products/teravoice)
(supported on W2k, WXP and W2k3) or
- an H.323 gatekeeper configured (like www.gnugk.org)
(supported on WXP and W2k3)
A gateway is simply an entity that converts calls from one protocol or
network to another (example: H.323 to PSTN gateway)
A gatekeeper is responsible for maintaining a user directory which maps
users, e-mail addresses and phone numbers together. It keeps a set of rules
how calls to certain numbers (eg. that belongs to other networks or
gatekeepers)
are being made (eg. like through the internet or through other gateways)
To use a gateway and a gatekeeper together, you configure the gatekeeper
in the H.323 TSP settings and configure the gateway in the gatekeeper
configuration (because the gatekeeper decides how to route calls, like to
forward calls that start with 0 to a gateway)
