TAPI guide for dummies

I'm simply trying to understand TAPI for an independent study project (call
all course members and leave a customized message for each then detect all
course members by their tel # [caller i.d I guess] and provide updated info
on their grades)...but it seems unusually complex. I am using Vb for
development. (Is visual studio 6.0 ok?)

I've downloaded the PSDK full Download with Local Install (but I only have
win 2k not 2k3) from

Can someone pls send me a link to the most compatible modem(LAN lines,cell
phones & voip) (according to the newsgroup these are the best

right?)

Is there any additional software that I will need to purchase to accomplish
this simple task? I also read that TAPI 3.1 does not work on win2k.....are
there any codesamples for caller id and making outbound calls (and leaving
mesages) for tapi 3.0?

I bought a book (which i haven't received yet) named Computer Telephony
Demystified, since there are lots of sample code..but little explanation on
the fundamentals(unless I'm searching wrong)
I work better by understanding fundamental api then building my app using
the basics..then if I get stuck I resort to analyzing samples.

If I violated any posting rule pls delete my post...I searched but couldn't
find any similar newbie seeking guidance posts
