On the side of submitting MMS messages (from outside the GSM system)
this is correct. Providers offer interfaces with either UCP or SMPP
protocol.
Both have beend extended for MMS messages.
MMS transfer within GSM is done by sending SMS messages which contain
a WAP link to the actual data. If you look at the MMS configuration settings
of providers you will see that there are two settings:
A gateway (in case of O2 UK: 193.113.200.195)
and a MMS messages server (O2 UK: http://mmsc.mms.02.co.uk:8002)
When sending messages they are sent to the gateway. When receiving
messages they are pulled via wap over http from the message server.
This is very different from the transmission of normal SMS (where no
IP protocol is involved).
I guess it was not possible to extend the SMS protocol because MMS
produced to much data for it.
