Not necessarily unpopular... :)

If you
a) Are going to choose a hardware vendor and stick with them
b) Are writing your own app and don't ever want to run anyone else's
c) Need a complete feature set
Then native APIs are the way to go.

If you
a) Need to work with a variety of hardware
b) Need to work with other applications
c) Need a low to mid cost solution
Then TAPI is a better choice.
