Because marketing department thought it sounded good. Don't read too
much into it.
Well, X probably stands for eXtension, since the technology has its
roots in VBX - Visual Basic eXtensions. First, they were called OLE
controls for some time - some of them still have .ocx file extension. At
that time, OLE was interchangeable with COM. Later, the meanig of OLE
has narrowed to the original meaning of Object Linking and Embedding -
that is, technologies concerned with compound documents. That's probably
when ActiveX term was invented.

Why must a trademark necessarily be meaningful? What do you think
"Microsoft" means, for that matter? Their software is rarely small, let
alone microscopic.
