Eugene,
As I said in other posts you have to uninstall at least all "security"
software and better yet try it on a "virgin" machine. If your IT
moro^H^H^H^H person doesn't want to do it you will have to try it on your
own box he doesn't control or VMWare. As a bonus if everything works there
you will have a pretty good reason to drop Symantec's crap. ;-)
I have tried running the same server at high load on my machine for hours at
a time, theoretically simulating weeks of activity in the real World
compressed in time and not experienced a problem. My machine has Windows XP
Professional Service Pack 2 and Symantec AntiVirus too.
It is difficult to simulate real conditions in a test environment, as the
thing that drives everything is customer files incoming at random times with
random contents. In addition, we actually have 4 servers among which the
"jobs" are distributed that I cannot use for testing. These machines have
expensive hardware and we don't have test copies lying around. However, I am
going to attempt to simulate it in a test environment with no security
software installed and leave it running for weeks if necessary.
AV and other "security" products work by inserting filters and hooks into
normal Windows kernel and user-mode operation.Theoretically this can be
done safely but in practice the people who do this stuff usually end up
breaking something. I've seen it many times myself (especially with
Symantec products) and according to other posts here and in
programmers'kernel I am definitely not the only one.
Yes, you and others that have said similar things are right... I need set up
that test environment.
