What part of my second sentence do you have difficulty
understanding? Quote:
"If the router has a single internal port, you'll need a separate
switch to connect all computers through to the router."
In fact, make sure it is indeed a router and not a simple
modem (as I begin to suspect). If the latter you'll need
a real NAT router behind it. An ISP typically won't give
you a router - only a modem.
BTW, please realize your question is completely out of topic
in a network programming group...

Thanks - yes the laptop works fine through the Ethernet connection - I
just couldn't get the desktop and laptop working together at the same
time. I downloaded a USB driver but my laptop still didn't get a feed
through it. As it happens now the house owner is getting a new Internet
supplier who will provide a different modem/router. Hopefully this will
have multiple outputs!

Presumably your laptop has an Ethernet port as well - use it.

I'm in Australia for a few months. Having bought my laptop with me I
was hoping to be able to just take a feed off a router that is
connected to a PC at the place I am staying. The main PC is plugged
into the router using an Ethernet cable. There is another socket on the
router which is a USB. I tried taking a lead from this and plugging it
into the USB socket on my laptop but it didn't work. Am I wasting my
time or is there an actual procedure one has to set up to get an
internet feed off a USB into the laptop?
The router is a Thomson Speedtouch 530 - nobody seems to know how it
works or has any instructions!
