Re: Single IP address for 2 Sun Servers

Do you mean that NLB cluster allow 2 host with the same IP to exist on the
same network :)?

FYI: to do this in windows, you use a NLB cluster (optional part of Server
2003 OS) except that the configuration is active - active.

It uses a virtual MAC to receive data on both / all servers and then some
other logic to determine which server to process the data (per TCP
connection)

I really know nothing about Sun network stack , but in windows that will
throw
both out off network, you can't set 2 IP simultaneously in MS network (
as I appreciate the same will be in any network , what you can do you can
add IP of the one to another when first failed and v.v

All

We have 2 Sun Netra Servers (x.x.x.x and y.y.y.y) in a private IP
network. How do we assign a single IP address to both the servers?

The reason behind this request is the following - we have built a
server application -

1. The applications which are present in these 2 Sun servers work in a
Active - Standby mode. Only the active application can process traffic
from the client. If the active dies, the standby becomes active.
2. The clients know to connect to only one server IP address.

So, let's say the clients are connected to the active application
running on one sun server (x.x.x.x) and traffic exchange is going on.
Now - the active application dies, the standby which is on (y.y.y.y)
will become active. Now - the clients need to connect to y.y.y.y to
send traffic to the new active application - but does not know y.y.y.y

Well - this is the constraint on the client applications. So, Is there
a mechanism by where by the clients can see a single IP address for
both the servers so that if the active dies and the standby becomes
active, the clients need to just re-connect using the same IP address??

We tried to use VRRP but we were not successful.

Any suggestions and thoughts on this is surely appreciated.

Thanks
