WIA, device command "WIA_CMD_TAKE_PICTURE" and camera control

Hi all!
WIA provides a way to snap and download a picture easily with
IWiaItem::DeviceCommand(...). However, there doesn't seem to be any way to
control any of the camera settings for taking a picture.
Is anyone aware of any machanisms to control the camera settings? I'm after
controlling zoom; our app should be able to acquire a person image via WIA,
and the zoom setting should be controllable for this.
The ideal situation would be having a permanent zoom setting which the
camera could be controlled to before snapping the picture.
The camera I now have for testing is a Canon PowerShot S2 IS. I know that
the Canon apps for this camera can handle remote shooting better, but for
our application using thise apps would result in a very clumsy solution.
Any pointers on the subject would be much appreciated!
Thanks,
-Pete
