Have you looked at the level example at ...
http://download.microsoft.com/download/vb60pro/sample1/1/WIN98/EN-US/Audiolvl.exe
.... this seems to use an inbuilt VB call to initialise the wave
headrers, but may give you some ideas. It is a self-extracting zip of
VB code.
