Anyway, like I said it wasn't really NTFS that the anger was directed at.

Of course there's also the recycle bin to consider as well as systemrestore
and so on. Depends what kinds of features you have enabled on your system
(most of which I have turned off; I think I recovered a single file from the
recycle bin in the last 5 years, and of course there were like 20 versions
with the same name and I couldn't manage to find the one I wanted - often
because I had no idea where they were being restored to).

Hey, you know what can be very rewarding?:

psexec -s cmd.exe ...

and then go to "System Volume Information" and have a look around there
(note: use "/a" for dircmd, everything has the 'H' flag on).

Anyway, one time I was pressed for HD space (installing DEVENV no less - on
an ALTERNATE drive grrr) and I was short about 3 Gigs for... uhh, temp
files? Well as soon as I realized the installer was about to install itself
(and my machine) into oblivion I interrupted it and went in there (kid you
not: 300Kb left and it kept churning away!). Well, the whole folder was
complete mess; forgotten system checkpoints, some dating back over 4 years!
Maybe they got lost during a re-install or something? dunno. Anyway I just
wiped the whole thing out and gained 5Gigs! Couldn't do much about the
registry disaster, but hey... at least it installed finally.
