sorry, but boot support != crash dump support

Doron,
Thanks for the reply. I don't think a startup script would work because as stated C: is a ramdisk that would vanish when the system resets. Unlike XP Pro, XP Embedded can be booted from a USB device. In that configuration do you think that the dump file could be written to the USB device? I currently boot from a server but I could boot from USB for test purposes.

no, you cannot use a network or usb thumb drive as a target for the dump file. to write the dump file, the OS uses a different driver stack to write out the bits to disk. this different stack supports scsi/pata/sata, but not usb or networked drives. what you can do is have a script which runs on reboot and does the copy to a usb disk or network drive if you want...

For XP/SP2 can I specify a USB thumb drive as the target for a kernel dump file? Can I use a network drive? The issue is that I need to get dump files for Windows XP Embedded in a headless/diskless configuration. I can mount a network drive or install a USB-based memory device but C: is a ramdisk therefore it vanishes after resets that are occurring.

A related question is that there are guidelines for page file size if dumps are needed that say the file should be 1.5 x memory size. Since the embedded system only has a ramdisk it is impossible for the page file to be greater or even close to the memory size. Will this be a problem?
