the FindExecuteable() Windows API function does not work with files like
"part1.sldprt".

How can I find the application for such files?

Not true. It works just fine -- I just tried it.

However, remember that FindExecutable is a relatively simple API: all it
does is look in the registry to find the application that registered that
extension. If no application is registered for the extension ".sldprt",
then there's nothing it can do. Try opening a command shell, and run
assoc .sldprt
Is anything registered?

Also remember that the file (e.g., "part1.sldprt") must exist.
FindExecutable won't work with an invented file name.
