Hector,
I asked and the vendor provided the same P4 Dual Core hardware
I am afraid you were much too optimistic......
The problem with CPU evolution is that, throughout the transition
period, you may come across CPU with a new feature.... or withot it!!!!
For example, around 2 years ago you could see Pentium IV with HT
support and without one right on the same shelf is the shop. Both CPUs
were Pentium IV, but, in order to get the one with HT you had to
specify that you need
HT support. I have to check it, but I don't exclude the possibility of
the same situation with Pentium D and x64 features - I am not 100% sure
they all support 64-bit stuff. In other words, there is a good chance
that your your CPU just does not support 64-bit features - this is why
you got 32-bit OEM OS

Anton,
The Intel specs all say the P4 support EM64T, I have the P4 Dual Core for
this machine.
So to confirm with Yes and No, the R2 Windows package will NOT give you an
option to not use the EM64T mode of the CPU and will automatically detect it
and install the 64 bit version of Windows 2003?
I appreciate your more detail response because I had brought two other
machines (practically the same) last month with NO OS for future 32 bit and
64 bit development purposes. I also got MSDN/PRO to install the OSes. But
MSDN/PRO didn't have a 64 bit OS, just the 32 bit OSes, Compilers and the
additional 64 bit compilers.
For this new machine, for a customer, requiring a special 32 bit PCI card, I
asked and the vendor provided the same P4 Dual Core hardware but with an OEM
Windows installed. Miscommunications I guess, they installed this new
Windows 2003 R2 X64 package.
Once they open shop in 3 hours, I will get this cleared, but I was wondering
if I can get around this situation by which R2 given me the option to
install only its 32 bit version, if any. The DOCS, README, etc, all seem to
indicate that approach is doable. But I guess the docs are generalized and
the CD version is what matters.
So presuming, when I had put this R2 CD1 on the other P4-Dual (EM64T
capable) machine, where I have the 32 bit XP installed, it would of probably
went ahead and installed the 64 bit version of Windows 2003 R2 if I had
continued with the installation. The R2 CD probably would of failed to
start the setup if it detected the CPU was not x64 capable (EM64T, I64,
AMD64, etc).
Does that sound correct?
Thanks

Hector,
The bottom line - if you want to run 64-bit Windows, you need
both x64 and 64-bit OS, which comes on a separate CD, so that
you have to specify a particulr version you want when
buying Windows
