Hi mate
I am afraid you chose the wrong place for expressing your "concerns" -
to be honest, we are more interested in technical discussions, rather
than in speculations. The size of your latest post roughly equals that
of an article, but there is nothing technical in it - things like that
are of very little interest to someone who is mainly on the technical
side(i.e. vast majority of NG participants)

Dan,
Reread my message, I was referring to the Sony RootKit espisode, probably
one of the most significant "White Knights, David vs Goliatrh" stories in
the annals of computing history which basically reminded the world
"IT IS STILL AGAINST THE LAW TO AUTOMATE HIDDEN BACK DOORS!"
He got US State Attorneys to SUE Sony for godsake, he got them to back down,
he cost them millions and more importantly he embarassed the world's most
significant OS vendor for its lack of security of stopping it.
So as any market power corporate leader will do: It only make sense that you
try to get this guy inside the loop.
Check out Mark's blog if you really want to see the overwhelming paranoia.
http://www.sysinternals.com/blog/2006/07/on-my-way-to-microsoft.html
To get me wrong, Mark (and Bruce) has to be admired for all the effort over
the past 10 years and like with all us in life, at some point, you begin to
realize the desire to obtain monetary fruits of your efforts. Usually
starts around 40 <g>
So again, I was strickly referring to the Sony Episode and all its related
issues such as the ever growing encroachment of security issues across the
board, from automated backdoors to P2P technology.
What I find ironic in this 20+ years Windows story, in what began as a
ENGINEERING TABOO of "thou shall not execute foreign scripts automatically"
that Microsoft violated in the name of OLE integration opened the door to
much of the all the security concerns and more importantly molding of the
layman mindeset that all this is "natural."
"Responsible Backdoorsis OK! Now click ok if you agree, you have no
other choice but to agree!"
The irony?
Well, Mark has patended technology that, gets this:
'Helps you control what YOU WANT TO RUN!!!!"
and this is POWERFUL technology that Microsoft must have in its IP
portfolio. Controlling this technology will limit exposure. Microsoft can
not have USERS deciding what automatically RESIDENT software is allowed to
do, especially since the "LIVE" strategy is the highest wave of concentrated
efforts.
So all this has come a full circle.
Now we have to pay for controlling what apps are allowed to run!!! and that
concept is now PATENTED!
So we, as humans are all happy for the man, but, in the big picture, this is
not good for the computing industry.
Not in my paranoid mind. :-) Here is my full paranoid swing!
Just ask these questions to yourself:
Do you trust inserting a CD on your machine? Today?
Do you turn off the internet when you install software?
Many moons ago, you had ask PERMISSION to do any outside communications.
This has slowly evaporated.
If you are familar with UCITA (Formerly article 2B, google it) the
provisions of US Interstate Commence Laws dealing with Computers and
Software Consumer Sales needs to change in order for this market to prosper.
Microsoft had not been successful in making that happen legally with one of
the biggest Lobbies in Washington in history. So MS did it the back end
way - by changing the mindset of the users with the paranoid of spyware and
security. In the name of SECURITY,. MS now has the ability to control your
machine.
First it started, Auto Update,
Next Web Base Windows Authentication Checks,
Next .NET with its automaticed "communicity hooks" and direct online
help,
etc, etc.
Today, UCITA is no longer important - Microsoft has succeeded in molding
the market and mindset of the computing industry; users and developers as
well. It is OK to do unsolicated open network communications and if you want
to use Windows, you have no real choice in the matter.
Still think I'm paranoid?
Do your google search on UTICA (and ARTICLE 2B) and then see's Ed Foster
article, "UCITA running on empty"
http://www.infoworld.com/articles/op/xml/01/07/02/010702opfoster.html
Where Ed is wrong with is that Microsoft no longer needs UTICA to pass. In
the name of security, MS has succeeded in molding your mind. Of course, MS
was helped with Apple's IPOD, P2P, SPYWARE, GOOGLE DESKTOP, networking of
your searched computers, etc, all opening the door to this wild wild west of
network computing.
Finally, do you think Mark will be allowed to tell MS,
"Fellas, some of this stuff is unethical..."
and still be employed by MS? I don't think so, instead, you will hear
"you will pay for controlling it what we want to run and
don't want to run."

You guys are paranoid. First if Microsoft wanted to shut them up, theythe
would not have as many knowledge base articles referencing the site or had
the tools appear in the Windows internals books by Microsoft Press.
Second, while I like Mark and Bryce's site a lot, much of the information
(not tools) is now available from other sources including MSDN
documentation! I do thank Sysinternals for getting it out first, but
assuming this is a "bribe" to shut them up, come on!
The tools are now a mixed bag, some of the older ones have better
replacements elsewhere (for example filemon, diskmon and regmon are for
most part built in to the OS with WPP tracing). Other of the tools ortheir
capabilities will hopefully be integrated into the OS proper where theypeople
should be.
On the positive side to extremely talented individuals are joining
Microsoft, and hopefully conveying their knowledge and wisdom to the
who bring us the OS.against

Mixed feels about this. Mark and Bruce help answer many of the Deep
Questions of the complex and 'hidden secrets" of the Windows Operating
Systems.
Always the skeptic, I am wondering if this was to shut the two up since
they
recently help put a stop to the Sony's CD RootKit episode early this
year, a
"Golden Egg at the end of rainbow" technology, that is currently
pursuingthe
US law, but is WAY TOO lucrative a market to stop Microsoft from
in
the future. The best way to begin is to hire the best and give them an
offer they can't refuse! <g> Mark, now a Microsoft Technical Fellow,
only
14 of them exist, is probably worth a few million in salary!! Good for
them!
I guess this now opens the door for the next young generation Vista and
beyond Kernel Breakers! This is now your opportunity to be the next
SysInternal.com web site for Windows! Go for it young bloods!!

When I heard this news I was bit upset too, yeah no more goodies. Any
how it is not that bad as well , of course putting efforts together
would produce something more interesting *but* with big stamp of
privacy and deep dark;-)
I think that MS is not as open as they should certainly I don't mean
that they are suppose to put their source on web announcing another
GNU. But atleast they should be a little more open and honest at the
same time rather just giving dangling pointers.
Hope for the best,
ali
