Hello Arnaud,
I have to admit that I had to go research what "top-post" meant. I
apologize for violating your sense of etiquette, however I am a bit
confused. If "top-post" means to post an answer before the previous
reply, isn't that what you just did in asking me to not do so? I'm not
trying to start a flame here but rather honestly trying to understand your
request. Also, it strikes me as ironic that I am posting to a Microsoft
newsgroup and have been criticized by a MicrosoftVP for using the format
provided to me by Microsoft's own Outlook Express! Again, I am not
interested in stiring up a big argument but because it appears that 1) your
reply was itself a ""top-post" and 2) Microsoft's own tool structures the
reply as a ""top-post" I am sincerely confused about what is wrong here.
I would also be interested in what you feel is the proper amount of "quoted
text" to leave in a response since you did not comment on that. It seems to
me that if everone leaves all of the prior response as quoted text in their
response that we are carrying (and downloading) an awful lot of redundant
data around (basically the thread is repeated in each post!) and that this
is a much bigger issue than posting a response at the top. In addition, I
thought that Outlook Express' structure of placing the response at the top
made sense because if you are following a thread you have just read the
prior response before you read the "answer" (right at the top) in the next
entry. It seems that the only reason for posting a resposne after the
quoted text would be that if the message is read independently of the whole
thread, having the "question before the answer" seems more natural but how
often would someone access and read a message outside the context of the
whoel thread?
I've been posting to various newsgroups for years (using OE) and this is the
1st time I've been criticised for this style so I'm surprised this has been
an issue. However, I'm flexible and am willing to change to meet standard
expectations, but it would help if you could address the questions I've
raised here.
Also, can you help me with my orignal question? ;>)
A new bottom poster,
Al.
