This is a machine by itself, not on a network (other than internet access).
I suspect somehow that logon and authentication has changed with SP2, but do
not (yet) know enough about this to track it down. This is XP Home, and
various newsgroup postings say that XP Home has been giving trouble to WMI
users (WMI looks awfully similar to this PDH stuff, and I think I remember
that I switched to PDH when WMI did not work on my first try with SP2 last
fall).
