that's what I suspected ... it's virtual black being converted to virtual
black (I doubt anyone's eye could see the difference)

well, that's what a printer profiles is suppose to do. (ie, seems normal).

ah ... long story ...
I suggest you read up a lot on different rendering intents (relative,
absolute, perceptual, and the other one). but be careful, as a lot of what
is written on the net about this topic (and in books and magazines) is not
quite correct. it is unfortunately a more messy area then it should be
because it is used in multiple ways. eg for spot color accuracy, then
absolute is best, but for a good looking photo, then relative or perceptual
is better. and then there is proofing. proofing is all about simulating
one device on another. eg simulating the printout on your monitor ... this
can shift the white, as the white of paper is not usually the white of the
screen. or simulating one printer on another printer.
