I can give you much better advice if you'd tell me what it is you need
to accomplish, but it's unclear to me what problem you're attempting
to solve.
I want to reinvent yahoo instant messenger with some additional bells
and whistles. I'd prefer a web page resident client like Macromedia
flash or RealNetworks Player. Windows Media player can be embedded in
a web page too, correct?
So how can I write a program that sends audio/video from my web cam to
a friend's client somewhere on the public internet? I know directX can
grab the frames. Does DirectX contain the libraries for the muxing,
encoding and sending an Audio/Video stream from my web cam to a remote
Windows Media Player? If not, where do I get these libraries? (I was
assuming they were part of those expensive media servers that
RealNetworks and MacroMedia sell -- but I'm not sure. I really just
want a function library, not a server). Do I have to pay for them? How
much do they cost? Can this mystery library from Microsoft send
audio/vidio to Flash and REAL clients too?
Assuming the answer is NO: Where do I learn about how to write a
program to send audio/video from my web cam to web page resident Flash
or REAL players? Do I have pay money for these libraries too?
Assuming all these options are very expensive: are there some open
source libraries for sending audio/video streams from my web cam to
propietary clients like Flash or Real or Windows Media
Player. Probably not.
I like the propietary clients like REAL or Windows Media Player or
Flash because web users are less likely to become nervous about
installing an activeX control from one of these companies. If I use an
ActiveX control from Ogg/Theora, they might not recognize it and be
reluctant to install it.
I did some google searching hoping to find some examples of sending
and receiving an audio/video stream from my cam using Ogg/Theora but I
could not find any code.
Can anyone guide me to some sample code? I did find a dandy example in
java from the java media framework that uses RTP with a custom web
based client. I wanted to investigate the other options.
Thanks,
Siegfried
