That VMR9 does not use hardware overlays is the heart of my question.
Many graphics adapters can be configured using the manufacturer's setup
utilty to simultaineously present video in an applicaiton window on the main
monitor and full-sceen on a second monitor. This can be demonstrated in
GraphEdit with a single instance of VMR9. I can see how a hardware overlay
might source two monitors but how this is done in Direct3D has thus far
escaped me despite a fair amount of searching for information.
I have a stong need for this type of display setup. It can be done with two
VMR9s but if graphics adapters have built-in capabilities to support such a
setup, I would like to explore them. Knowing how it works supprts better
design descisions.
VMR7 supports overlays. The VMR7 instance will attempt to use and overlay
and then fall back to an off-screen surface. If your video card is so
configured the overlay will appear full-screen on the secondary display.
