Error 0x80040241 suddenly - files used to work, but sort of stopped recently..

System is Windows XP SP2 with lots of patches. I've got WMP11 installed, and
again, lots of updates/patches for it. There are a bunch of codecs, plus
things like DivX and Elecard. It's a Dell Inspiron 8500 that's used for
development (in Delphi primarily, but there's lot of other things installed
like VS 2005, Eclipse, etc.)
The files in question are all MPEG video files (both 1 and 2). They used to
play - I'm writing software that's plays these back. WMV and AVI files play.
When I try to launch a "bad" file in WMP11, I get an error telling me that I
have a problem with a sound driver. If I launch the same file with Elecard
Player, it works.
If I try to render the "bad" file in GraphEdit via File | Render Media File,
I get an error. If I drop a File Source (Async) into GraphEdit and then
select the file and render the output pin, it works.
I've used AVICodec and GSpot to look at the file, and they both tell me the
type, etc. But GSpot can't show me a rendering of the file - it shows
messages saying there are problems with the codec for the source.
This is driving me nuts! Google wasn't my friend - the only messages I found
for this error tended to deal with old versions of WMP, or problems with
uninstalled codecs. As far as I can tell, I have everything I need to render
the files, but the system can't figure out how.
Anyone seen anything like this, and more importantly, anyone have any
suggestions on how to get this working again?
Thanks.
