Audio mix in, slows down video playback

I have an avi with audio and video.

I am able to "mix in" another wave file into this avi file using DES.
The problem is where ever I have insert the audio, the video starts
playing back choppy (in numerous players). Once the additional audio is
played the video playback returns to smooth playback.

Can anyone suggest why this would be happening?
