d3d debug VMR9 fails

halo.
when in the directx-applet i choose to use the debug version of direct3d i can no longer create a vmr9 filter with a custom allocator.
more precisely the line: MyAllocatorPresenter.AdviseNotify(FSurfaceAlloctorNotify); fails with: E_NOINTERFACE. resulting in the vmr9 not working.
switching back to d3d retail version works. but since i want to debug something around the vmr9-allocator-presenter this doesn't help me.
problem occurs with April05 and June05 SDKs
any ideas? joreg. .
