There is a windowsmedia newsgoup fairly close to this who will be better
equipped to deal with this question

microsoft.public.windowsmedia.sdk or
microsoft.public.windowsmedia.player[.web] would be good guesses.

There is also a mailing list WMTALK which has a number of helpful and expert
participants. it is in or near discuss.microsoft.com

browsers appears erratic, eg WMV with Netscape. I'm also unsure of the
interaction between browser and player that sometimes results in two or even
three GETs of the same document.
