X file or Vertex/Index Buffers?!

Is the Vertex Buffer / Index Buffer automatically taken care of when u use Mesh.Load(.x file) or u have to manually manage that? In other words, why would I use VB/IB if I can load a .x file most of the time?
There must be some additional overhead because of the extra abstraction but is it worth the trouble... or they are used for different purposes, Meshes for complex models and VB/IB for simpler models to render faster.
