Do some research, I think you'll find there are lots and lots of reasons why
there hasn't been a purely 3D-hardware-driven operating system yet...
That and Win32 is (at the core) pretty much the same as it was when it
appeared in Win95 (10-11yrs ago if you count development time)... Sure the
later OS's have added/improved stuff but the basic design is the same...
As for competition - I think you'll find there are 2 significant competitors
(even if they have a lesser market share): MacOS and Linux/Unix...
