Multi-monitor problems

I recently connected a second monitor to my ATI 9600pro and
now when I call Direct3DCreate8() I get the following message
in the output window:

Direct3D8: (WARN) :****Direct3D DRIVER DISABLING ERROR****:First call to
DdQueryDirectDrawObject failed!

If I try to proceed, the call to CreateDevice() later on always fails
with the following error: D3DERR_NOTAVAILABLE.

Any ideas on what is happening?
